Safe Work Australia has announced the theme for National Safe Work Month 2026, with ‘Safe work is for life’ chosen to reflect the campaign’s focus on workplace health and safety as something that extends well beyond the prevention of immediate harm, encompassing the protection of workers’ lives, health and long-term futures. For cleaning and facilities management operators whose teams work daily in environments carrying real physical risk, the theme carries particular resonance.
Held each October, National Safe Work Month provides workplaces across Australia with a dedicated period to focus on safe and healthy work for all. This year’s campaign aims to shift the conversation from reactive compliance toward a broader understanding of what workplace harm actually costs, both for individuals and the organisations and communities around them.
The numbers behind the theme
The scale of the challenge is significant: in Australia 188 workers lost their lives to traumatic workplace injuries in 2024, and there were 146,700 serious workers’ compensation claims recorded in 2023-24, a figure that equates to more than 400 serious claims every single day across the country. Each of those statistics represents a preventable incident with consequences that can extend for years, affecting not only the worker, but also their family, colleagues and employer.
Safe Work Australia has emphasised that work should never cost a person their life, their health or their capacity to live fully outside of work, and that every workplace has the ability to make a meaningful difference through genuine consultation, proactive risk management and sustained long-term commitment to safety.
Four weeks of focus
The campaign will unfold across four weekly focus areas throughout October: the first week (1-11 October) will explore why Work Health and Safety (WHS) matters; the second week (12-18 October) will examine what WHS protects in terms of health; the third week (19-25 October) will address the long-term impact of workplace harm; and the final week (26-31 October) will call for action across all workplaces.
Safe Work Australia has committed to providing resources and practical tools throughout the month to help workplaces reflect on what ‘Safe work is for life’ means in the context of their own operations, and take concrete steps to reduce serious injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Cleaning industry businesses are encouraged to begin planning their participation now, whether through internal safety reviews, toolbox talks or engagement with the resources available at safeworkaustralia.gov.au/national-safe-work-month.
