Shopping centre cleaning ‘code of conduct’ attracts 28 signatories

The Shopping Centre Council of Australia (SCCA) and Building Service Contractors Association of Australia (BSCAA) have handed down their inaugural annual report for the Code of Conduct for Fair Service Provision in Shopping Centres.

A Register of Cleaning Service Providers, established in 2023, has attracted the signatures of 28 shopping centre cleaning service providers to date in support of a unified industry framework.

The SCCA and the BSCAA developed the code of conduct for cleaning providers to ensure services were undertaken in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

BSCAA chief executive officer Kim Puxty said the code outlined the ethical practices that all cleaning contractors and facility managers must follow, including fair employment standards, transparency and compliance.

Puxty said the BSCAA were committed to establishing a “level playing field” which allowed for fair competition and built trust and confidence with clients.

“Cleaning service providers are committed to upholding the highest standards and the 2023 Annual Report demonstrates the importance of the code of conduct in encouraging industry best practice,” Puxty said.

“The publication of the 2023 Annual Report and the Register of Cleaning Service Providers

highlights to shopping centre owners those cleaning service providers who have agreed to comply with the code of conduct. BSCAA members are determined to demonstrate and promote a culture of compliance.”

SCCA chief executive Angus Nardi said the association encouraged its members to require service providers who tender for their contracts to be signatories of the code.

“We look forward to continuing to strengthen and improve the code to ensure services are undertaken and contracts are managed to the highest standards,” Nardi said.

“We will continue to promote the code as the industry standard and encourage more cleaning providers to become signatories to the Register of Cleaning Service Providers throughout 2024.”
