Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) is calling on organisations to develop, document and implement a sustainable procurement policy to govern all purchasing decisions by 31 December 2020.

GECA’s Positive Procurement Pledge provides organisations with the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their leadership by committing to use their purchasing power in a way that will do good for the planet and the people on it.

The pledge is open to any organisation – regardless of sector, size and location – that is involved in procurement decisions and processes.

Pledgers will need to measure and prove their progress to GECA over a three-year period and allow GECA to publicly share their key achievements.

“Sustainable procurement is about considering the environmental, social and economic impacts of purchased goods and services,” said GECA. “Through sustainable procurement, organisations can build resilience and become future-proofed through increased efficiency and effectiveness.

“The Positive Procurement Pledge has been designed to allow organisations to move to the next level at their own pace no matter where they’re starting from. It’s about making significant progress across the pledge period and beyond, not perfection.”
