Infection prevention in education facilities

Three critical steps for cleaning and disinfection of schools and education facilities.

Education facilities can be exposed to a range of pathogenic micro-organisms. These micro-organisms can infect your students if appropriate infection prevention practices are not in place.

If not cleaned and disinfected correctly it can result in your facility becoming a hot spot for viruses, which is why it is highly important to ensure your facility follows best practices to protect your students and staff.

There are three critical steps to ensure your facilities are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. These are:

1. Surface clean

Regular cleaning of surfaces using a neutral detergent solution or wipe will ensure you have a safe environment and will limit the risk of infection transmission between your staff and students.

Whiteley recommends using Surface Clean to encourage regular cleaning of surfaces. Surface Clean is pleasantly perfumed, removes permanent markers and cuts through grease and soil.

2. Surface disinfection

Disinfecting high-touch points is critical in preventing the spread of germs in education facilities. There are three types of disinfectants that are suitable for education facilities:

  • Surface cleaner and disinfectant – Viraclean® is a two-in-one product that cleans by removing the visible soil on surfaces, while also disinfecting by killing the bacteria on the surface. Viraclean® is a hospital-grade disinfectant proven to kill a wide range of bacteria and viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza virus and hepatitis B group virus.
  • Disinfectant and air freshener – Mr Bean is a multipurpose cleaner, commercial-grade disinfectant and air freshener. With a delightful tutti-fruity fragrance, Mr Bean is safe for use on most surfaces and can be used in any area where soil build-up is a problem, including floors, walls, bench tops and doors.
  • Surface disinfectant – Lemon Disinfectant is a commercial-grade disinfectant and multipurpose cleaner. With a refreshing lemon scent and pH-neutral formula, it can be used on high touch points and most surfaces, including floors, walls and surfaces.

3. Hand Hygiene

Correct hand hygiene is critical in preventing the spread of germs within educational facilities. Everything we touch picks up bacteria or helps spread the bacteria further which is why it is crucial to sanitise our hands regularly.

Ensure hand hygiene stations are conveniently located throughout the facility in high-traffic areas for ease of use.

Whiteley recommends using Sanitol™ or Sanitol Jade sanitisers which are both gentle on the skin, kill 99.99% of germs and contain natural emollients that leave hands feeling soft and revitalised.

Following these three simple steps will allow infection control to be better managed, when maintained thoroughly, within your facility and protect staff, students and visitors from infection.
