Speaker presentation quality was a feature of the 2012 Institute of Hospitality in HealthCare (IHHC) national conference, which took place at Cairns Convention Centre (Qld) from 12 to 14 September.

It hosted a range of delegates from environmental services, food services, cleaning, retail outlets, food safety, nutrition, quality assurance and other sectors of the healthcare industry.

The three-day multi-stream program featured international keynotes, industry experts, regulators and influential business leaders exploring key issues facing hospitality in healthcare.

Day one began with a Waste Not – Want Not symposium with talks given by Doug Baird, environmental compliance manager of Green Island; Chris Hill, sustainability manager of Mater Health Services; and Simon Gardner Lee who is the general manager of strategy and sustainable development for SITA Australia.

There was a focus on hospital cleaning on day two with Southern Health’s director of support services Sharon McNulty delivering an overview of the implementation of cleaning innovations at Southern Health. The results not only improved cleaning standards but also reduced the cost and environmental impact of cleaning, which sparked the audience’s interest.

Other seminar topics covered areas in nutrition, food and health, operational efficiencies, workforce planning, staff motivation, computerised management systems and microfiber systems. Delegates also had the opportunity to accompany environmental compliance manager Doug Baird on a tour of the ‘back of house’ waste handling of the environmentally protected and beautifully scenicGreenIsland.

The Trade Show area housed conference supporter stands offering delegates the opportunity to view the latest products and services and meet suppliers face to face. During morning tea and lunch, they had the chance to ask questions and explore new technologies within hospitality in healthcare. Premium level sponsors of the conference were Comcater and M&J Chickens.
