Jaymak celebrates 20 years

Jaymak Australia marks 20 years in the hygiene services and cleaning industry with a new product line and further expansion plans.

Jaymak Australia is commemorating 20 years in the hygiene services and cleaning industry with a new product line and further expansion plans.

South Australian-based cool room cleaning and mould remediation provider Jaymak Australia is entering its next “pivot” after 20 years in business.

Founded in Sydney by father and son team Peter and Mark Mackenzie in 1998, the company relocated to Adelaide in 2004, where the national franchise office was established in the following year.

“[Jaymak] started predominately as a cool room cleaning company,” Mark Mackenzie told INCLEAN.

“I was working with my father at a chemical distribution company and we identified that there was a significant amount of mould in cold rooms. We began working with a Sydney-based company on developing a product to help control the amount of mould found in cold rooms.”

Jaymak has since steadily expanded throughout Australia and has 20 franchised businesses. The franchise network services more than 6000 venues across Australia in a range of industries including hospitals, aged care facilities, restaurants, take away food outlets, hotels, clubs, school canteens and food manufacturing.

The company also specialises in infection control and HVAC cleaning, and offers additional specialised hygiene services for air-conditioning, fridges, air handling units, dishwashers, ice machines, cold display units, plant rooms and full kitchen cleans. Jaymak is the only ISO 9001 & ISO 22000 certified company in Australia for specialised cleaning services to the hospitality, health care and food services sector.

According to Mackenzie, Jaymak holds a substantial footprint in the healthcare and aged care markets, understood to be around 36 per cent market share. Its other key markets include hospitality such as pubs, restaurants, cafes and hotels, as well as food processing and manufacturing, with Vili’s Family Bakeries one of the company’s major clients.

“We just hit more than 14,000 cool rooms nationally and have more than 6000 clients around Australia, but healthcare and aged care remain our strongest markets.”

Since the launch of its franchise office in 2005, Jaymak has built its national franchise network to 20, largely in New South Wales and Victoria, in regional areas such as Orange, Albury and Newcastle. The company would like to add another five franchisees to the network, predominately in regional areas, during the next 12 months.

“We have recently picked up some large national tenders in NSW, Victoria and Queensland so we would like to have more franchisees in the next one to two years, mainly in those regions.”

To mark its 20th anniversary, Jaymak has launched Jayfresh, a chlorine dioxide-based slow release mould and bacteria abatement system, providing low maintenance ongoing bacteria odour and mould control.

“We’ve only had one major pivot in our 20-year history. It was in 2011 when we expanded our existing offering of cool room cleaning to more advanced services. The second [pivot] is the introduction of Jayfresh.

“We saw a gap in the market and looked at how we could commercialise the need for [Jayfresh] in our market. We knew our sector needed it and we wanted to make it commercially viable.

Jaymak has also launched a new website which allows users to purchase Jayfresh online. Mackenzie says the company will look to launch more products and services under the Jayfresh banner including soon to be released Jayfresh Rapid.

“Jayfresh Rapid is similar to a three to four hour [cockroach] bomb. The room needs to be sealed and the bomb will completely sterilise the room. Jayfresh Rapid won’t be sold as a product but instead will be offered as a service due to safety.”
