Planning is well advanced for the Professional Housekeepers Association NSW (PHAN) ‘Olympic-themed’ function, which will be held at Sofitel Wentworth Sydney on 10 August. Each year PHAN has a major event and this year it will, appropriately, tap the Olympic Games’ excitement.

“It is a great opportunity for the executive housekeeping fraternity to get together and celebrate the important role our housekeeping teams play in the successful operation of major hotels and hospitality sites,” states PHAN president Maureen Jolowicz, Radisson Blu Hotel Sydney’s executive housekeeper.

“This event can only be held with the great support we receive from our 20 or so sponsors,” she adds.

PHAN’s sponsors include A H Beard, A L Hayles, Accommodation Linen, Cannon Hygiene, Challenger Cleaning, Chefs Works/Uniform Works, Dallen Uniforms, Diversey, Ecolab, Empire, Frenkel Textiles, HRC Group, International Hotel Services, Lawrence Dry Cleaners, Nanospace, New Century, P&R Consultants, Q Flow International, Scuttle Clothing, Sealey, Spotless/Ensign, Otal Workwear, Valitel and Ralph St Laundry.

PHAN, which has some 40 individual senior executive housekeeper and industry training executives, expects about 250 people to attend the dinner.

At a PHAN committee meeting held 24 July at the Meriton Serviced Apartments (Sydney), as well as signing-off on the Olympics dinner arrangements, a number of other matters were discussed, including finalising of the Association’s new website.

This internet site will provide an excellent knowledge resource as well as act as a marketing tool for PHAN.  “While we have a strong membership we need to continue to attract new members as well as interested sponsors,” notes Jolowicz.

PHAN was founded in 2005 by a group of Sydney-based, executive housekeepers. A not-for-profit incorporated association, it represents housekeeping and accommodation management in the Sydney region.

PHAN is dedicated to supporting and encouraging all employees in housekeeping and allied areas with training, education and mentoring across all areas of the operation. This is provided by seminars and workshops with industry experts and invited specialists across the wide range of activities that are part of the regular function of the housekeeping department.

The benefits of PHAN membership

“In joining PHAN, executives are demonstrating their commitment to achieving the highest standards of professionalism in our industry,” Jolowicz emphasises.

Through PHAN, members can keep up-to-date with new products and methods; network, learn and share with others in the industry; contribute to development programs for housekeeping; learn how to increase guest and staff satisfaction; learn on the job service skills; and benefit from shared knowledge in their specific area.
