The Professional Housekeepers Association of New South Wales (PHAN) held its annual celebration at The Menzies Hotel (Sydney) on Friday 20 September, delivering a night full of fun, entertainment and laughs.  This year’s appreciation theme was dedicated to the housekeeping fraternity to thank them for the endless hours of loyalty, commitment and high standard they deliver in their jobs every day.

The night began with pre-dinner drinks where more than 215 housekeeping staff and 40 sponsors mingled before being seated in the Menzies’ ballroom and welcomed with an address from PHAN president, Maureen Jolowicz.

“I would like to welcome you all on behalf of the PHAN committee. Tonight is a recognition and acknowledgement of what a fantastic job you all do. I know that the guests and the management really appreciate it,” she praised. “But it’s the owners that should appreciate you most because if it wasn’t for housekeeping, they wouldn’t make any profit. If we didn’t do our job well, the hotels wouldn’t be making any money so we should all be so proud of the job we do every day.

“Every year we like to hold a function for the hotel fraternity and we can only do this with the support from our suppliers and sponsors and I’d like to thank them, because if it wasn’t for them, PHAN would not exist. We want everyone to be a part of the association which is why we have these celebrations. I hope you all have a great night because you deserve it.”

The night kicked off by introducing the special ‘celebrity’ judge when Elvis entered the building who serenaded the guests before judging the ‘housekeeper’s got talent’ contest. There were six acts including dancers, singers and even a magician, however Elvis awarded the winning prize of $500 to Mary and Sangita  from the The Darling Hotel (Sydney) who wowed the audience with a vigorous traditional Indian dance.

The atmosphere was buzzing with laughter and screams of delight as housekeepers filled the dance floor to congratulate the winning talent act and join them to dance the rest of the night away. The evening came to a close after lucky door prizes were given out and Elvis finally left the building. A fitting ‘thank you’ celebration, PHAN and its members and sponsors all had a wonderful night.
