Few off-field partnerships feel as symbolically fitting as Eden Park’s new agreement with OCS. Organised sport has been played on the Eden Park site since 1900, the very year OCS was founded. More than 125 years later, those parallel histories have converged through a new contract that sees OCS deliver cleaning services across the stadium.

The scale of the challenge is considerable. On a typical weekday, around seven OCS colleagues maintain the stadium’s presentation, a figure that swells to more than 200 people when Eden Park hosts a major fixture or concert, preparing the venue for crowds of up to 60,000.

According to OCS marketing and communications manager Carole Norris, that variability sits at the centre of the service model. “Eden Park is a uniquely diverse venue, so our service model is designed to be highly flexible and scalable,” she says. “We adjust resourcing and delivery in line with the event profile, from smaller, non-event days through to large-scale matches and concerts, supported by cross-trained teams, a large pool of casual staff, contingency planning and technology such as robotics and integrated management systems and smart task scheduling.”

Norris says this combination has allowed the business to hold its standards steady even as demand shifted sharply from one week to the next, whether the stadium was hosting an All Blacks Test, an international cricket fixture or one of up to 32 concerts staged at the venue each year.

Familiar faces, global backing

Retaining local knowledge has proved just as important as building flexibility into the delivery model. More than 90 percent of the on-site and casual team transferred across to OCS from the incumbent provider, a figure Norris says reflected a deliberate effort to protect continuity for both the venue and its workforce.

“We worked closely with the incumbent team to support the transfer of employees where possible, ensuring valuable site knowledge and experience were retained,” she says. “In practice, this means maintaining familiar faces on-site while providing additional management support, training, clear communication and development opportunities, helping create stability for both the team and the client from day one.”

Drawing on more than 125 years of facilities services experience across 13 countries, OCS has pointed to comparable stadium projects internationally, including Everton Football Club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, as evidence of transferable systems and best practice. “That global expertise translates into proven systems, best practice in safety and service delivery, and insights from comparable stadium environments,” Norris says. “Combined with experienced local leadership, this enables us to deliver a service at Eden Park that is both globally informed and tailored to the specific needs of the venue.”

Norris adds that the partnership extends beyond the stadium gates. “We recognise the role Eden Park plays in the wider community, so our approach is focused on supporting not just the venue itself, but the fans, neighbours and stakeholders who make it such an important part of Auckland’s cultural and social landscape.”
