The restoration and indoor environmental sectors have reached a pivotal moment with the formal adoption of AS-IICRC S520:2025 – Standard for Professional Mould Remediation. The Restoration Industry Association of Australasia (RIA) says the new standard delivers long-needed clarity and strengthens consumer protection, while setting a clear benchmark for professionals tackling mould-affected properties.
The standard offers an authoritative, evidence-based framework for responding to mould contamination triggered by moisture intrusion, water damage, condensation and other environmental conditions. It provides clear guidance to restoration professionals on the proper assessment, mitigation and remediation of mould in residential, commercial and institutional settings. It also reinforces rigorous requirements around containment, safety, engineering controls and contamination management to protect occupants, workers and property.
RIA president Brodie West says its adoption is a milestone for both the industry and the community. “It brings consistency, professionalism and science-based clarity to a complex service area that directly impacts health, property preservation and consumer confidence,” West says.
She says the formal adoption of AS-IICRC S520:2025 elevates industry standards and helps ensure work is completed to the highest standard of care, based on proven protocols rather than varied or subjective approaches.
“It underscores the importance of engaging qualified professionals who follow research-driven procedures for mould remediation,” West says. “It strengthens protections for occupants, workers and property alike.”
For restoration businesses, insurers, facility managers and regulators, the standard provides a shared language for professional practice, accountability and quality assurance. For consumers, it helps build confidence that remediation work is performed safely, effectively and to a transparent standard.
RIA acknowledged the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) for enabling the Australian adoption of this respected international standard. It also recognised the work of Standards Australia’s ME-094 committee, which is steering the growing standardisation of property and contents restoration and remediation.
The publication of AS-IICRC S520:2025 marks an important step in strengthening the future of the restoration sector, with a clearer, more consistent and professionally recognised framework for mould remediation across Australia.
