New speakers join Australasian Restoration Conference

Patent and trademark attorney and qualified microbiologist to present.

Restoration Industry Association (RIA) has announced more speakers for the upcoming Australasian Restoration Conference and Trade Show.

Newly announced speakers include registered Australian and New Zealand patent and trademark attorney, Matthew Sulman and qualified microbiologist, Dr Wes Black.

Sulman is a registered Australian and New Zealand patent and trademark attorney with more than 20 years’ experience as an intellectual property lawyer protecting, advising and prosecuting client’s intellectual property rights commercially and through the courts.

Sulman will present on trademark protection and how to capture and enhance the value of business names, brands and other business insignia.

Black is a qualified microbiologist and author of five papers on respiratory diseases, published in peer-reviewed research journal publications. Black founded Biotopia Environmental Assessment in 2011 and has performed many assessments of buildings affected by water and fire, with specialities in mould and faecal coliform bacterial counts, post-remediation verification (PRV), scopes of works (Remediation) and chemical analysis of sites and drinking water.

Black will present on the challenges of blackwater floods, the consequential impact of disease and the challenges of dealing with homeowners who often refuse to believe their home and contents have been fully restored.

Certified training will also be on offer during the three-day event, with the Contents Science and Theory (CST) course to run in conjunction with the RIA Conference & Tradeshow.

The course, which is a pre-requisite to the higher RIA designation of Contents Loss Specialist (CLS), will also cover period furniture (antiques), textiles (upholstery, oriental rugs, window coverings), identification and inspection, particles and residues, cleaning and deodorising, electronic restoration and wood restoring and refinishing.

Other training sessions include the Environmental Contaminants in Buildings Workshop on Wednesday, 12 June, and the Violand Business Planning Retreat on Saturday, 15 June until Sunday, 16 June.

The RIA Australasian Restoration Industry Conference will be held at Twin Waters Novotel on the Sunshine Coast from 12 June to 14 June. The three-day event will conclude with the RIA Gala Dinner, where the 2019 RIA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented.
