GBCA director re-elected vice chair of World Green Building Council board

Re-elected GBCA director is the first Australian to serve as global vice chair.

Tanya Cox of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has been re-elected vice chair of the World Green Building Council’s (WorldGBC) board of directors.

The WorldGBC board of directors is comprised of senior leaders in the building and construction industry from 15 green building councils around the world.

Cox, who was re-elected vice chair position for a second term, was initially appointed to the WorldGBC’s board on 1 July 2016, serving as treasurer from 2017 to 2018 and before being elected vice chair in 2018, the first time an Australian has been appointed to the position.

Cristina Gamboa, CEO, World Green Building Council said: “Tanya has continued to demonstrate outstanding leadership in the field of sustainability and has championed green building as one of the most effective solutions to climate change.

“Our board of directors is an influential group of global leaders which works hard to ensure WorldGBC delivers on its collective mission of green buildings for everyone, everywhere. As WorldGBC prepares to implement a new three-year strategy in 2020, Tanya’s role as vice chair will be essential to fulfil the full potential of WorldGBC globally. I look forward to working with her and our fellow Directors to make our mission a reality.”

Cox said she is honoured to have the opportunity to continue in the position of WorldGBC vice chair.

“Our efforts to realise a net zero carbon future in the built environment are accelerating as we strive to fulfil the role the built environment must play in helping to meet the targets set out in the Paris Agreement and the commitments made under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“I am very proud of the work we are doing in Australia to articulate the net zero roadmap and the work of our members who are world leaders in sustainability in the built environment.

“Through the WorldGBC we are sharing knowledge from our achievements, learning from the successes of colleagues around the world and working collectively to achieve our shared goals.

“I am particularly pleased to be able to help shape and deliver the WorldGBC’s next three-year strategy, which will enable us to achieve the transformational and lasting change globally that is so clearly required.”

Cox is a former chair and current director of the GBCA board and a non-executive director of various ASX listed and unlisted boards.

She was formerly COO of DEXUS Property Group for 11 years. Cox holds an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management, a Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The World Green Building Council is a global network of Green Building Councils in almost 70 countries. Collectively we are committed to reducing the building and construction sector’s CO2 emissions to reach net zero by 2050.

The board’s role is to advise and oversee WorldGBC’s organisational strategy and governance, to ensure it is operating effectively as a not for profit organisation and delivering on its mission.
