With very much a ‘people’ agenda as his main focus, Terry Corby was elected Building Service Contractors Association of Australia’s national president at a board meeting held late May.  He has been a long serving NSW president and replaces Rodney Barnes, who remains on the national board in his ACT president’s role.

The BSCAA national office will now be administered from the New South Wales’ branch office.

“I am proud to have been elected to this national position and I am committed to enhancing the contracting industry’s health as well as building a stronger Association,” Corby told INCLEAN.

His goals include setting up, in every state, portable long service leave schemes. To-date they exist in the ACT, NSW and Queensland.

“I have been a very strong supporter, and facilitator, of the NSW portable long service scheme and like those in the ACT and Queensland, it has been of great benefit to both employees and employers,” Corby noted.

Recognised for nurturing relationships with the union, Corby will continue to work hard in maintaining a harmonious relationship with United Voice.

“While cleaning industry training has made great strides in recent years there is always more we can do and I will be encouraging our members to place as much attention as possible on educating their staff. It really is a most cost-effective and practical way of improving industry standards as well as building a stronger financial base,” emphasised Corby.

Complementary with training is the need for all service providers and their clients to incorporate, wherever possible, cost-effective green cleaning systems onto all sites.

“Again, much progress has been made on the green front and under my watch I aim to keep the momentum up,” Corby added.

Naturally, in what have been very tough times, the incoming national president is cognisant of the imperative to improve his Association’s overall financial position. “I have a pretty hard-nosed approach to finances and budgets and I’ll be working diligently, with treasurer Brian Ellem, in this area.”

Joining Corby on the national board are past national president Rodney Barnes (ACT); national treasurer Brian Ellem (Queensland); national vice president George Stamas (Victoria); Graham Westley (South Australia); and Shannon Daniels (Western Australia). The NSW board member will be known early July following an annual general meeting.
