Emergency services were called to the Haveli Indian Restaurant in Riverstone on Tuesday morning after staff discovered the worker unresponsive. The cleaner, part of the overnight crew, was found by the restaurant owner and his son. Despite CPR efforts by staff and first responders, the worker could not be revived.
Seven others, including five police officers and a member of the public, were taken to hospital in stable condition after exposure.
Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed extremely high levels of carbon monoxide inside the two-storey venue. Specialist hazmat crews remained on site to investigate the source of the leak.
Restaurant owner Resham Singh told Hills Sydney he learned of the tragedy through staff members and expressed his deep sorrow. Local MP Warren Kirby extended condolences to the worker’s family and those affected.
Authorities confirmed that investigations remain in the early stages, with a coroner’s inquiry to follow. The incident has prompted renewed calls for businesses to install gas detection systems and ensure proper ventilation, particularly in enclosed environments where cleaners and staff may be working overnight or outside trading hours.
