sodexoSodexo announced it has been awarded a 10-year contract with leading global mining company Rio Tinto, estimated at AUD$2.5 billion, to deliver integrated facilities management services in the company’s extensive operations in Australia’s Pilbara region.

‘This is the largest contract of its kind for Sodexo and exemplifies the Group’s ability to deliver on major contracts in the energy and resources sector,’ stated the company on 16 March.

The confirmation confirms market speculation that Sodexo was the frontrunner for the contract, the first time Rio has consolidated the provision of services across its non-mining operations in the Pilbara region.

The contract will cover Rio’s ports, towns, aerodromes, operational sites, accommodation sites, commercial buildings and residential properties. Rio Tinto iron ore chief executive Andrew Harding said the contract would deliver a range of benefits including improved and consistent services across all Pilbara accommodation and facilities areas and significant cost savings.

“We are continuing to identify safer, smarter and more cost-effective ways that will best position our Pilbara iron ore business for the future,” he said. “The long term contract with Sodexo offers many benefits including improved services for our people, innovation and investment in systems, sub-contracting opportunities for local businesses and suppliers. Each ensures additional long-term value for our business.”

Sodexo CEO Michel Landel said the contract was a major step forward for his company. “It demonstrates the value our unique global footprint and deep sectoral knowledge brings to clients like Rio Tinto, to enhance quality of life for teams operating in challenging environments. Mobilising an international team of nearly 100 industry experts, we designed a solution for Rio Tinto that reflects the commitments of both companies to improved performance, responsible growth and development of the communities in which we operate. I am extremely pleased and proud to expand this partnership, which will bring the best of Sodexo to Rio Tinto.”

The contract takes effect in the second half of 2016.
